  Karel Hirman is director of the Section for Energy Activities at the Slovak Agency for Innovations and Energy (SIEA) and adviser to the Slovak Prime Minister. He holds a M.A. in the exploitation of hydrocarbons from the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas in Moscow, Russia and a B.A. from the Technical University in Košice, Slovakia. Karel initially focused on energy security and the role of energy in international relations as a journalist for Czech-, Slovak- and English-language publications, including the Czech Press Agency, Radio Free Europe and the Trend weekly (1998-2003). He then moved on to work in the Slovak energy industry, as a manager for external relations at the Slovak Gas Industry (2003-2005), a board member at the Košice Heating Plant (2005-2006) and a trade manager at the Košice-based metal supplier Steelinvest, s.r.o. (2006-2007). His published work includes "Russia at the End of Yeltsin’ s era" (1999, Institute for Public Affairs) and "Russian Energy Transport Routes and Central Europe" (2003, Eurolex Bohemia). Karel has also published a plethora of articles and blogs on the subject. Since the 1990s, he has been an associate scholar at the Slovak Foreign Policy Association (SFPA, Bratislava). |
